DIY Embellished Accessories | Flowers and Pom-Poms

Well hello there! After cultivating all of my possible blog post ideas I realized that I really wanted to do some sort of DIY for you guys. I have a pretty nice-sized Pinterest board of all the future fashion DIYs I want to try, so I thought why not? Instead of copying the DIYs on this board I actually made my own. Well… I actually ended up just raiding through my large selection of craft supplies and adding whatever random tidbits I could find to whatever accessories that were in reach, but same-difference. Hopefully you’ll enjoy all the fun ideas, and the end result, so I really recommend trying these out!

DIY #1: Floral Collar

I’ve been wanting to do any sort of DIY project with a collar for a while, but I could never figure out what. Originally I was planning a Miu Miu inspired collar, but quickly tired of the idea after seeing them all over the internet. When thinking of possible accessories and bits I could embellish, this collar immediately came to mind.

The whole project is very simple, and quite fun. I just got some colorful felt from a craft store, in a variety of colors. Then I used the template listed in this DIY, and taped it to the felt with masking tape. Just so you know, it was easiest to cut the felt when it’s thick and stiff, so having masking tape on the edges really helps. Then all I did was hot glue small, flat, fake flowers from one side to the other, (with a few leaves in between) making sure the flowers slightly overlapped, and the colors were spread out. I thought that the collar looked best when the flowers were laid down and flat, so I glued the edges of the petals down to ensure this. Lastly, I cut 2 strips of 15 inches of ribbon, and glued down 1 inch of this to the felt. Once everything was dry, the DIY was done. I really love all the colors, and the shape of the flowers, they remind me of little fairies.

DIY #2: Pom-Pom Clutch

If you couldn’t already tell I have a love for flowers/pom-poms, and novelty items, especially clutches. It only seemed fair to make some sort of tribute to one of my two loves, so here we have it. This is probably my favorite DIY out of all 3, so I really hope you try it.

I picked up this really simple bag from Forever 21, making sure that it seemed like a material hot glue could attach to. It was pretty simple, the only thing you might not remember is to put masking tape or painters tape on the zipper so that you don’t hot glue it closed. Then I just hot glued the pom-poms to the clutch and allowed time for it to dry. It’s easily customize-able, just because of the fact there are so many colors, sizes, and features of pom-poms that no two of these project will ever look the same.

DIY #3: Floral/Pom-Pom Bun & Hair Wrap

Once again, I was inspired by Pinterest for this DIY. My hair is too short for a bun, so I sort of re-imagined this for ponytails and such things. Out of all these DIYs it is probably the most simple, and versatile, but that doesn’t mean it’s not as good as the others. Since these are so easy to make, and cost so little, you can make a large bulk, so that there’s room to pick and choose.

I didn’t have any suede lace or daisies like the DIY said, so I decided to try to make it my own way. Twine was the thickest ribbon type of material I had, so I decided to use that. This was such a laid-back project, since I just eye-balled everything, and didn’t do any real measurements. I unwound a significant amount of twine, but didn’t cut it off the spool, since it’s better to have too much then too little. After that I started gluing flowers and pom-poms about 1/2 a foot or so from the end of the twine, until it looked like enough to cover 3/4 of a bun or ponytail. Then for the pom-pom hair wrap I went in and glued the sides of each individual pom-pom together. After guesstimating, I left another 1/2 foot at the end of the twine, and chopped it away from the spool. Once everything was dry you can tie this with the flowers at the front of the ponytail or bun, and you’re done!

I guess you could add more flowers and twine to make a headband too.

Hi my peeps! I’ve been looking for a way to share with you some of the inspirations and things I’ve been loving lately. If you follow me on Pinterest you may have already seen some of these images, but that’s OK, they’re lovely enough to see again. This is slightly similar to my recent post with Langley Fox as my “fashionspiration,” but sort of different. Hopefully you’re a fan of the 90s grunge, MEGA-BABE bloggers, snazzy street style pics, and editorials… (Inspiration images via Pinterest)

~90s, MEGA-BABE Bloggers, and Flower Power~

I have a lot of different inspirations at the moment, so they don’t all fit into one theme, but they’re a mix between 90s, bloggers, editorials, and street style. I really want to have include some sort of retro aesthetic in my outfit, whether that means a suede 90s skirt, thick platform sandals, or bell bottom jeans. I think that some of these pictures really sum that up. Overalls are also a goal of mine, mainly because of Justina Sharp, and Tumblr. There’s also been a few bloggers I turn to for inspiration nowadays, the MEGA-BABES of the blogging world, such as Tolly Dolly Posh, and Clover + Dot, as well as Tavi Gevinson, and Fashion Your Seatbelt. I’ve been loving scuba fabric, and high waisted, light wash jeans, especially the effortlessly cool, grunge or retro vibes. Pastels don’t seem to match the rest of this, but flower crowns do, so of course I had to include a few of both. Pastels and bright colors may seem to contradict each other, but those have also been really big inspirations for me as well.

What I Wore: Mineral Wash Overall Shorts (Forever 21)//Short-Sleeved Knit Sweater (ASOS )//Black Patent Leather 1460s (Dr. Martens)//Simple, Stacked, Rope Bracelets (Assortment)

Surprise, surprise, I wore my Dr. Martens. Despite what you may have been thinking due to my Dr. Martens and flower crown lookbook, A, I do own other pairs of shoes, and B, I do wear them. But I couldn’t help myself, these clunky boots just scream grunge, and 90s fashion. Plus, Dr. Martens, are pretty much iconic, meaning they’re all over Tumblr, meaning that I was automatically effortlessly cool. I paired those beauties with another one of my personal favorites, overalls. I was considering whether I wanted to get a pair of shorts, or full length pants, but I’m glad I decided on the shorts, they just seem to match the OOTD really, very well. Despite the fact that overalls are pretty popular every summer, that’s not really one of the reasons I bought them. In fact, it was because of this crop top. I have made an executive decision, and decided that sleeveless, turtleneck crop tops are the coolest things out there, and they really compliment these overalls. I would have preferred black to match my shoes, but you have to take what you can get in sales.

Due to the fact that my local delivery has decided to be exceedingly slow, I couldn’t wear this turtleneck, but I could wear this just as pretty, yet slightly less 90s inspired shirt.

Had I owned a choker necklace I probably would’ve worn that, but instead I just wore this simple little mouth necklace, mainly because it just seemed grunge inspired. Instead stacked a bunch of simple, small, and sometimes rope bracelets, (which I do almost everyday in the summer) just to add a little flair. Oh and the flower crown… You’ve been seeing a lot of flowers, crowns, and DIYs on this blog lately, mainly related to my next big project, but no one knows what it is. Anyways, I paired one of my absolute favorite and probably most retro flower crown with this whole ensemble. Daisies, they have good vibes you know?

Lookbook | 4 Ways to Style Dr. Martens 1460s

A few months ago I decided that I was absolutely in love with Dr. Martens, and must own a pair immediately. Luckily I received some for Christmas, but unfortunately they were a tad bit big. Anyway, after a quick but fun trip to the Dr. Martens store I was able to pick up a pair of my beloved boots, and go on my merry way. Now onto another story of my absolute obsession. Last summer I read pretty much every article about Tavi Gevinson there is, as she’s such a major inspiration. This led me to the world of flower crowns, but the DIY version. It’s safe to say whenever I had really bad nights, (Fridays), I would make a variety of decorated headbands. These have even led to another big project I will be announcing in a month or so. The excitement of owning a pair of these beauties, and a plethora of flower crowns may or may not have caused me to go on quite the fashion rampage, similar to the montages in movies complete with clothes flying through the air, an amazing soundtrack, and the changing of my nickname on my phone to, “The Next Tavi Gevinson.” I thought it was worth sharing, so here we are. The doc is in! Flower power!

Top Tip: After browsing though Pinterest I discovered an amazingly simple way to spruce up an ordinary pair of Dr. Martens, while still displaying your love of flowers. Simply pull some of the prettiest artificial flowers (in a variety of colors) you can find off of their stems, and intertwine/thread the laces through the holes in the center. Voila!

Dr. Martens Look 1: Effortlessly Cool

This outfit I chose is actually an ensemble I got for my birthday! It’s really colorful and spring-like but you could easily add tights for winter. The sweater is super big, soft, and Tumblr-like to it’s a nice and girly piece that really matches this skirt. The clunkiness and chunkiness of the boots really balance all of the girly vibes, as well as matching the black in the sweater. I added a simple bejeweled fish necklace, and paper clip earrings, just to the outfit wasn’t too effortless. To me an effortlessly cool style is full of lovely, simple, Tumblr vibes which I think I have portrayed quite well.

Dr. Martens Look 2: Edgy

I wanted to wear a pants in at least one of these looks, but skirts and dresses just seem to come more naturally to me. Luckily I was able to pick out an outfit for you, so here we are! Black Dr. Martens like these are clunky and edgy especially with pants, so that’s really what I went for. The shirt is very baggy and tomboy-ish so I definitely wanted to pair it with something tighter. Obviously that’s where the tights/pants (I can’t tell which) came from. I embraced the gold tube beading on the pockets of this shirt and pulled out some old and new favorites (jewelry) of mine.

Dr. Martens Look 3: Summer Colors

I definitely didn’t want to go a whole post wearing only black bottoms, so I knew I had to add some sort of color. I’d actually left this skirt at my grandmother’s house over the summer, so when I got it back I knew that I had to wear it immediately. Same goes for that crop top, it’s one of my favorite pieces in my closet and couldn’t gone unworn much longer. The hints of pink on the front of the shirt really match the skirt, and the black base matches the boots. Since their was so much on the shirt I didn’t add a necklace, but instead just some simple earrings to match. P.S. I posed like this, because I couldn’t help but feel like a superhero in these boots and a skirt.

Dr. Martens Look 4: Geeky Schoolgirl

I got the inspiration for some of these outfits from late night Pinterest browsing, where most of my inspiration comes from. There I saw an OOTD featuring Dr. Martens and a pinafore, which I knew I had to take inspiration from. It wasn’t really a geeky look, (actually it was really grunge-inspired and sort of goth) but I’d never turn down an opportunity to wear my pinafore (I wore it before in this OOTD too). This cropped sweater is new, and I’m absolutely in love with it, so I thought, why not? Besides, I love the look of crop-tops with pinafores, overalls, and like pieces. Of course I had to add this necklace, which I sort of wore every other day for a while, then abandoned for just as long. I’ve been trying to give it more use lately.

Channeling my Inner ‘Langley Fox Hemingway’

Recently I discovered some of the closet tours, and interviews with some of the worlds next “It Girls,” and ever since I’ve been hooked. All the pictures are very vibrant, lovely, and quite inspiring. Since I had read about Langley Fox Hemingway in one magazine or another a little while ago, and really loved her simplistic style, I decided to delve further into the world of a certain someone. This led me to a new style of posting, one where I embodied the spirit of a new inspiration for one outfit or two. All “fashionspiration” images via The Coveteur.

This might just be me, but all these pictures remind me of a bohemian, indie summer movie, complete with dreamy filming, and a fairy-like actress. Everything is beaches, and flowers, and fields full of dandelions and daisies. There be even be some of retro, tacky Californian vibes hidden in the mix. I really want to do a sort of bright, flowing, yet simplistic outfit, which I think really comes through in these pictures. There’s also that Tumblr vibe, where everything comes off as effortlessly cool, even if it’s nothing but a pair of shoes and some flowers. That’s also something I want to encompass in my outfit. I’ve also found that everything is really laid back, there’s just simple, timeless pieces without any big statements, which stands out in it’s on way. I’m not so sure how that’ll work out considering I find outfits like this pretty, yet boring, but we shall see.

I think I have succeeded in channeling my inner Langley Fox Hemingway, at least in this outfit. Let’s work our way from the top down. This headband reminds me of festivals, Coachella, and the like, so it is perfect for indie, bohemian vibes. The flowers encompass my field of daisies, and effortless summers. I can imagine Langley Fox as the willowy, free-spirited older sister with lots of wisdom that disappears one summer, and for some reason, a necklace with this cliche quote just seems to fit that. The “XOXO” necklace really has nothing to do with Langley Fox, it’s a personal choice, as are the gold charm bracelets. I did not pick this “Hello” cuff because I like people, and socializing is fun (never), but because it’s very Tumblr-esque, and that is important in this sort of OOTD. The pinafore. I think that sort of thing is just so easy to throw on, yet because it is a dress type of piece, it instantly looks more glamorous than it actually is, which is perfect for a Langley Fox Hemingway inspired outfit. And the shoes, partly personal preference, and partly because they just seem to add to the overall flow and vibes of this here outfit.

Well, that’s that! I really enjoyed writing this post, especially finding the “Fashionspiration,” and writing about how I wanted to encompass all the different elements in my outfit. Hopefully you’ve found a new inspiration, because I’m certain that I have. I’ll probably be trying some other “fashionspirations,” and icons because I really liked the style of this post.

What Does the “Posh” Trend Mean Now?

Posh. Elegant. Luxurious. Upscale. Traditionally posh is high class, lavish style; perfectly polished. But with the rise of young models and fashion icons like Cara Delevigne and Suki Waterhouse comes a new type of posh.

A few months ago, being “hipster” was everything, it was the new posh. Following the mainstream trends was bad, and rebelling against it was good. But soon afterwards, everyone wanted to be “hipster,” and this sense of style quickly became a mainstream trend. It received lots of backlash in the media, and slowly slunk away.

Without any leading trends in the fashion world, there was room for almost everything. Specifically, the low-maintenance, simplistic, indigenous styles of fashion’s newest top models. Even Chanel and Burberry loved this style, as soon after it became popular this style was seen of the runways Spring/Summer ’15 shows.

In the past models were supposed to be especially well put together, rich, elegant. But now I cannot say the same. Delevigne is known as an urban Brit, friends with the best of celebrities. Waterhouse has similar friends, as she enjoys the companionship of film producers and studio executives alike. Others like Hannah Weiland are creating their own brand, perhaps named after a small crustacean. Despite this, the young models who started these trends seem surprisingly relate-able, with their natural and intuitive sense of humor.

I do have to say that this style is quite fun, and appealing, especially for me. Despite the fact that the trend is supposed to seem so _______, I cannot help but feeling it is perfectly refined. This new-found style is easy, and pretty, and classy in its own way. While I’m not sure I’m ready to sport, kilts and parkas, I can say that there are elements for everyone, from tomboy trousers to mini dresses.

OOTD | 2 Trends; Layers & Leather

So in a recent OOTD I said I was wearing old favorites, and finding new ones buried in the back of my closet. It’s the same situation here, these pants are a new favorite of mine, in fact I hadn’t worn them ever before this. This outfit is definitely a little bit edgier than the dresses I normally wear, but I really like it nonetheless.

What I Wore: Black Leather Pants (Piper Project)//Plaid Flannel Shirt (Gap Kids)//Navy Blue Sweater//Statement Necklace (J. Crew)//Heeled Ankle Boots (Lucky Brand @ Saks Fifth Avenue)

This is an outfit from a little while ago, when it was close to freezing outside, which is why there are so many layers and dark colors. Luckily the weather has gotten nicer, and photo opportunities have become more frequent and common. Anyways, in this outfit I really wanted to be better than my previous OOTD, which really caught people’s attention. I thought it called for some drastic measures, so I whipped out the leather pants from the bottom of my drawer.

I knew that this outfit needed some layers, after all pants and a sweater is something anybody could come up with. Since I’ve really been enjoying the laid-back look of button down and flannel shirts I added this red and blue one to the mix. Once I had that it was easy to add the navy blue sweater; they seemed to match perfectly.

The accessories are really what made this outfit spectacular. Despite what has appeared on my blog, I don’t actually wear these heeled ankle boots a lot so I was glad they made an appearance. They’re really very simple, but I think that the classiness of the boots really contradict the bagginess of the pants, so it’s a pretty great balancing act. At first I was skeptical, but once cuffed the pants everything seemed to fall together.

I also added this necklace to pull the whole ensemble together. The colors really go together well, especially with the pretty pink tones of the circular jewels. It’s not really my necklace, my mom’s actually, but it fits the outfit, so I just had to borrow it. I’m also really glad that I went with a necklace that’s short and like a collar, rather than a long one with a pendant, as this makes the outfit look really put together.

Birthday Wishlist | ASOS, Forever 21, & Vagabond

Well how do you do? Great, well that’s lovely. Considering the fact that my birthday is a little over two weeks away, and the fact that I haven’t done this sort of post, since… well… October of last year, I thought I would do a wishlist. Some of these pieces are for spring, (which is 1 day after my birthday) and others are for winter. I’m sad to say I live in a place where it will not be warm for weeks, so I can still squeeze in a couple more sweaters.

Bottoms-

Ever since I saw acid-washed, and light wash denim jeans, especially the distressed kind, I’ve been wanting them. They’re so perfect for spring, girly, and they remind me of ‘mom jeans’ but not in the loose, baggy way, that I could not help but want a pair. But they’re also sort of retro, which is always a goal. Speaking of retro, owning that skirt would probably be a major accomplishment of mine. No, it would definitely be.

Sweaters and Sweatshirts…

I really love the loose fit of sweatshirts, especially with skater- and midi- skirts, so this pink one was an obvious attention grabber. It says ‘Love of My Life’ in oh, I don’t know, FRENCH, so how could I not? I’ve been looking for simple ways to make more interesting outfits, and this mod cardigan (that looks more like an expensive jacket) is an obvious contender. And now the mesh top I’ve been wanting for a while. This is a loose knit, but I really like the boxy high silhouette, and how you could pair it with almost anything, spring or winter. I really like this sweater, first of all because it’s velvet, and purple, and I’d feel like royalty.

Shoes…

I know, I know, jelly shoes, they’re not the most stylish at first, but they’re slowly coming back, especially with the right skirt or dress. Oxfords, always a good thing. I couldn’t see them going wrong in any outfit, and I really love those cliche pieces (Burberry trenches, Oxfords, Dr. Martens, Vagabonds, etc.) so another pair couldn’t hurt.

Oh, and the lovely Vagabonds. These deserve their own paragraph. I honestly cannot even express how much I need a pair of these shoes. They’re so boxy, and chunky, and cliche that I must, I MUST own a pair. They’re definitely expensive, but they’re also definitely a must have.

Bags…

I’ve said many, many times (specifically in a post about the best quirky fashion brands), but I do love novelty pieces, especially the clutches and bags. Recently I’ve been liking New Look. They have some really inexpensive clutches shaped like unicorns. If that wasn’t enough to give you a rush, there’s also clutches shaped like food, so you’ll get a sugar rush. See what I did there?

A/W 15′ Street Style Trends | Pastel Pinks and Classic Plaids

Well, hello. Yes, you there, how have you been? Well I’ve been just dandy. I was going to start a new series today, but it was taking longer than I thought, so I improvised. Today’s post is going to be a fun one, a mix of fashion week street style, AND trends. Now I know not everyone follows trends just because a blogger says so, because I certainly don’t, but I do think the street style is inspiring, as are the trends. I really did enjoy blogging today, I whipped out my notebook, fancy pens, and everything. In fact, pretty much the whole post was researched and drafted on paper. So with that being said, I hope you enjoy reading it! All images via Style.com

Pastels-

Probably one of my favorite trends of all time, pastels like mint and pale blues have made an appearance of the streets of fashion week. Traditions have been broken, and it’s a trend for the better. Not too bright colors like dusty pinks, baby blue, and subtle greens fit right in the the traditional, icy colors of winter, like greys, blacks, and browns.

Statement Bags-

While I do find purses to be a burden at times, I definitely do love this trend. With all sorts of quirky-cute bags going around these days, I might just have to start carrying one. Of course with all the jewels, charms, and patches this bag will will instantly be the center of attention, so I recommend pairing it with a simple outfit.

Color is not what I think of in terms of winter. But apparently the winter days are not to be full of dully greys and crisp blacks any longer. TO the beat the winter blues bright and bold colors have been from out from the closet, like lemon yellow, goldenrod, and canary yellow. So pull those summer colors out from your basement and embrace the change.

This is a trend I can actually hop on the bandwagon for, and right away. Everyone knows the classic Burberry Prorsum prints and pieces, but this year a new favorite has prevailed. The brightest colors you can get in winter, toned down blues and yellows, along with rich reds and purples have made an appearance of the plaid Burberry scarves this season.

OOTD | Old and New Favorites

Well hello there! Yes, my schedule has been changed yet again. I will post every 3-4 days though. It’s OK though, I am coming back an rewarding you for your patience with brownie points, and an OOTD.

Lately I have been banning myself from wearing certain items in my closet that have been over-worn. It’s led to a lot of frustration, but also a lot interesting outfit combinations, and a fresh look at what’s actually in my closet. I’ve been wearing things I’ve never considered before, and finding out that certain pieces really do match more than I thought. Hopefully this adventure will lead to more interesting OOTD and some new favorites in my closet.

I’ve also recently been looking for more creative ways to display my photos, so I thought that outfit lays would be a good choice. They’re actually in my blogging inspiration notebook, so I’ve been looking for an excuse to give it a try. Plus face it, sometimes you really just don’t want to be on the model.

There has been so many reasons why I didn’t want to wear these pants. First of all, they’re a little too big in the waist, so a belt is necessary. Second of all, I really didn’t think that green went with many other colors, and therefore it was close to impossible to find a matching shirt and shoes. It turns out these pants are great after all.

This sweater was new, and I was dying to wear it, but I couldn’t imagine pink matching many colors other than black and white. So I was a little bit skeptical about this shirt and pants combination, but it worked out in the end. I’m definitely looking forward to wearing these two pieces again, in yet another creative way.

After explaining how uninspired I was recently, I decided that there would be no better time to pull out the magazines, and the sketchbook to start an “Inspiration Journal!” I actually have a few ideas for series, and posts, which I’m really excited about. At first I couldn’t decide on a post to write today.

I settled upon one that requires no photography, since with the schedule I set for this week, I’ve been especially busy. But hopefully on Friday I’ll have an OOTD, so there will be pictures soon.

Since I’m always looking for online stores with more out-of-the-ordinary items, and I know others are too, I thought I’d share some of my favorite quirky fashion brands and stores with you today. All have extraordinary pieces.

Skinny Dip London

I saw this brand a while ago, but I never thought much of it. Then I was looking for a statement purse, one for myself and one to recommend to a friend. Skinny Dip London just popped into my head, and off I went. I especially love the clear box clutches with colorful jewels, and the food themed purses, like popcorn and ice cream. They’re a little bit on the high side in terms of price, which has been holding me back from purchasing one, but they’re excellent gifts. I’d probably pair this with some slightly simple pieces, to really make the purses pop, and make the overall outfit more original.

Lazy Oaf

To tell you the truth, I’ve always been obsessed with the Lazy Oaf brand. Everything here is so funny, and child-like it’s hard not to enjoy. There are some obvious references to childhood favorites such as Garfield, Looney Tunes, and Batman. There’s always an unexpected twist in these pieces, such as the texture, like fur, or the theme, like a shirt that looks like a calculator for a back to school line. The prices are a little high, but all good things must come with a price. Lazy Oaf also has some really interesting look-book videos on Vimeo, my favorite being Space Oddity.

Spangled Sunglasses

I know, I know, I’ve talked about Spangled sunglasses more than enough. But I just can’t forget this brand or recommend them enough. Made for festivals, these sunglasses are nothing like you’ve ever seen before. The gems and animals are brightly colored, making everything look like candy. And I know you like candy. Sure you can buy the sunglasses without the dinosaurs, hippos, and/or chains, but really, what’s the fun in that? I believe the price has gone down since the shop first opened, so that’s a plus too.

Whenever I imagine Top Shop I imagine glittery, furry, pastel clothes with a retro focus. Of course, that’s not always what’s actually in the store, and that’t not actually the inspiration of the collection. Oftentimes, in the winter the majority of the clothes everywhere are boring; a sea of grey and black sweaters, pants, and shoes. But sometimes, just sometimes, if you look hard enough you can find a few prize pieces. Of course you could also just wait until summer, when practically everywhere you look there’s color and creativity, and obviously, quirk.
