• My Style & Inspiration | 90s, Bloggers, & Flower Power

Hi my peeps!  I’ve been looking for a way to share with you some of the inspirations and things I’ve been loving lately.  If you follow me on Pinterest you may have already seen some of these images, but that’s OK, they’re lovely enough to see again.  This is slightly similar to my recent post with Langley Fox as my “fashionspiration,” but sort of different.  Hopefully you’re a fan of the 90s grunge, MEGA-BABE bloggers, snazzy street style pics, and editorials…  (Inspiration images via Pinterest)

I have a lot of different inspirations at the moment, so they don’t all fit into one theme, but they’re a mix between 90s, bloggers, editorials, and street style.  I really want to have include some sort of retro aesthetic in my outfit, whether that means a suede 90s skirt, thick platform sandals, or bell bottom jeans.  I think that some of these pictures really sum that up.  Overalls are also a goal of mine, mainly because of Justina Sharp, and Tumblr.  There’s also been a few bloggers I turn to for inspiration nowadays, the MEGA-BABES of the blogging world, such as Tolly Dolly Posh, and Clover + Dot, as well as Tavi Gevinson, and Fashion Your Seatbelt.   I’ve been loving scuba fabric, and high waisted, light wash jeans, especially the effortlessly cool, grunge or retro vibes.  Pastels don’t seem to match the rest of this, but flower crowns do, so of course I had to include a few of both.  Pastels and bright colors may seem to contradict each other, but those have also been really big inspirations for me as well.

What I Wore:  Mineral Wash Overall Shorts (Forever 21)//Short-Sleeved Knit Sweater (ASOS )//Black Patent Leather  1460s (Dr. Martens)//Simple, Stacked, Rope Bracelets (Assortment)

Surprise, surprise, I wore my Dr. Martens.  Despite what you may have been thinking due to my Dr. Martens and flower crown lookbook, A, I do own other pairs of shoes, and B, I do wear them.  But I couldn’t help myself, these clunky boots just scream grunge, and 90s fashion.  Plus, Dr. Martens, are pretty much iconic, meaning they’re all over Tumblr, meaning that I was automatically effortlessly cool.  I paired those beauties with another one of my personal favorites, overalls.  I was considering whether I wanted to get a pair of shorts, or full length pants, but I’m glad I decided on the shorts, they just seem to match the OOTD really, very well.  Despite the fact that overalls are pretty popular every summer, that’s not really one of the reasons I bought them.   In fact, it was because of this crop top.  I have made an executive decision, and decided that sleeveless, turtleneck crop tops are the coolest things out there, and they really compliment these overalls.  I would have preferred black to match my shoes, but you have to take what you can get in sales.

Due to the fact that my local delivery has decided to be exceedingly slow, I couldn’t wear this turtleneck, but I could wear this just as pretty, yet slightly less 90s inspired shirt.

Had I owned a choker necklace I probably would’ve worn that, but instead I just wore this simple little mouth necklace, mainly because it just seemed grunge inspired.  Instead  stacked a bunch of simple, small, and sometimes rope bracelets, (which I do almost everyday in the summer) just to add a little flair.  Oh and the flower crown…  You’ve been seeing a lot of flowers, crowns, and DIYs on this blog lately, mainly related to my next big project, but no one knows what it is.  Anyways, I paired one of my absolute favorite and probably most retro flower crown with this whole ensemble.  Daisies, they have good vibes you know?

Well that’s that!  What are some of your current “fashionspirations?”  What aesthetics have you been loving?  How do you translate your inspiration into an OOTD?  Let me know in the comments.

  • Lookbook | 4 Ways to Style Dr. Martens 1460s

A few months ago I decided that I was absolutely in love with Dr. Martens, and must own a pair immediately.  Luckily I received some for Christmas, but unfortunately they were a tad bit big.  Anyway, after a quick but fun trip to the Dr. Martens store I was able to pick up a pair of my beloved boots, and go on my merry way.  Now onto another story of my absolute obsession.  Last summer I read pretty much every article about Tavi Gevinson there is, as she’s such a major inspiration.  This led me to the world of flower crowns, but the DIY version.  It’s safe to say whenever I had really bad nights, (Fridays), I would make a variety of decorated headbands.  These have even led to another big project I will be announcing in a month or so.   The excitement of owning a pair of these beauties, and a plethora of flower crowns may or may not have caused me to go on quite the fashion rampage, similar to the montages in movies complete with clothes flying through the air, an amazing soundtrack, and the changing of my nickname on my phone to, “The Next Tavi Gevinson.” I thought it was worth sharing, so here we are.  The doc is in!  Flower power!

    Dr. Martens 1469s

Top Tip:  After browsing though Pinterest I discovered an amazingly simple way to spruce up an ordinary pair of Dr. Martens, while still displaying your love of flowers.  Simply pull some of the prettiest artificial flowers (in a variety of colors) you can find off of their stems, and intertwine/thread the laces through the holes in the center.  Voila!

This outfit I chose is actually an ensemble I got for my birthday!  It’s really colorful and spring-like but you could easily add tights for winter.  The sweater is super big, soft, and Tumblr-like to it’s a nice and girly piece that really matches this skirt.  The clunkiness and chunkiness of the boots really balance all of the girly vibes, as well as matching the black in the sweater.  I added a simple bejeweled fish necklace, and paper clip earrings, just to the outfit wasn’t too effortless.  To me an effortlessly cool style is full of lovely, simple, Tumblr vibes which I think I have portrayed quite well.

    Dr. Martens Look 2:  Edgy

    DSCF2412

    DSCF2414

I wanted to wear a pants in at least one of these looks, but skirts and dresses just seem to come more naturally to me.  Luckily I was able to pick out an outfit for you, so here we are!  Black Dr. Martens like these are clunky and edgy especially with pants, so that’s really what I went for.  The shirt is very baggy and tomboy-ish so I definitely wanted to pair it with something tighter. Obviously that’s where the tights/pants (I can’t tell which) came from.  I embraced the gold tube beading on the pockets of this shirt and pulled out some old and new favorites (jewelry) of mine.

Dr. Martens Look 3:  Summer Colors

I definitely didn’t want to go a whole post wearing only black bottoms, so I knew I had to add some sort of color.  I’d actually left this skirt at my grandmother’s house over the summer, so when I got it back I knew that I had to wear it immediately.  Same goes for that crop top, it’s one of my favorite pieces in my closet and couldn’t gone unworn much longer.  The hints of pink on the front of the shirt really match the skirt, and the black base matches the boots.  Since their was so much on the shirt I didn’t add a necklace, but instead just some simple earrings to match.  P.S.  I posed like this, because I couldn’t help but feel like a superhero in these boots and a skirt.

I got the inspiration for some of these outfits from late night Pinterest browsing, where most of my inspiration comes from.  There I saw an OOTD featuring Dr. Martens and a pinafore, which I knew I had to take inspiration from.  It wasn’t really a geeky look, (actually it was really grunge-inspired and sort of goth) but I’d never turn down an opportunity to wear my pinafore (I wore it before in this OOTD too).  This cropped sweater is new, and I’m absolutely in love with it, so I thought, why not?  Besides, I love the look of crop-tops with pinafores, overalls, and like pieces.  Of course I had to add this necklace, which I sort of wore every other day for a while, then abandoned for just as long.  I’ve been trying to give it more use lately.

What’s your favorite Dr. Martens look?  Which flower crown is your favorite?  Tell me in the comments below, and stay tuned for my next big project, involving these lovely flower crowns.

P.S.  My next big project might include a free giveaway.

  • Channeling my Inner ‘Langley Fox Hemingway’

Recently I discovered some of the closet tours, and interviews with some of the worlds next “It Girls,” and ever since I’ve been hooked.  All the pictures are very vibrant, lovely, and quite inspiring.  Since I had read about Langley Fox Hemingway in one magazine or another a little while ago, and really loved her simplistic style, I decided to delve further into the world of a certain someone.  This led me to a new style of posting, one where I embodied the spirit of a new inspiration for one outfit or two.  All “fashionspiration” images via The Coveteur.

This might just be me, but all these pictures remind me of a bohemian, indie summer movie, complete with dreamy filming, and a fairy-like actress.  Everything is beaches, and flowers, and fields full of dandelions and daisies.  There be even be some of  retro, tacky Californian vibes hidden in the mix.  I really want to do a sort of bright, flowing, yet simplistic outfit, which I think really comes through in these pictures.  There’s also that Tumblr vibe, where everything comes off as effortlessly cool, even if it’s nothing but a pair of shoes and some flowers.  That’s also something I want to encompass in my outfit.  I’ve also found that everything is really laid back, there’s just simple, timeless pieces without any big statements, which stands out in it’s on way.  I’m not so sure how that’ll work out considering I find outfits like this pretty, yet boring, but we shall see.

What I Wore:  Navy Blue Pleated Pinafore (J. Crew)//Grey “Geek Shirt” (J. Crew)//Pink and Purple “XOXO” Necklace (ghdsj)//Gold Quote Necklace ()//Gold “Hello” Cuff (Forever 21)//Gold Charm Bracelets (Alex and Ani)//Cat Ear Flower Crown (Forever 21)

I think I have succeeded in channeling my inner Langley Fox Hemingway, at least in this outfit.  Let’s work our way from the top down.  This headband reminds me of festivals, Coachella, and the like, so it is perfect for indie, bohemian vibes.  The flowers encompass my field of daisies, and effortless summers.  I can imagine Langley Fox as the willowy, free-spirited older sister with lots of wisdom that disappears one summer, and for some reason, a necklace with this cliche quote just seems to fit that.  The “XOXO” necklace really has nothing to do with Langley Fox, it’s a personal choice, as are the gold charm bracelets.  I did not pick this “Hello” cuff because I like people, and socializing is fun (never), but because it’s very Tumblr-esque, and that is important in this sort of OOTD.  The pinafore.  I think that sort of thing is just so easy to throw on, yet because it is a dress type of piece, it instantly looks more glamorous than it actually is, which is perfect for a Langley Fox Hemingway inspired outfit.  And the shoes, partly personal preference, and partly because they just seem to add to the overall flow and vibes of this here outfit.

Well, that’s that!  I really enjoyed writing this post, especially finding the “Fashionspiration,” and writing about how I wanted to encompass all the different elements in my outfit.  Hopefully you’ve found a new inspiration, because I’m certain that I have.   I’ll probably be trying some other “fashionspirations,” and icons because I really liked the style of this post.

Who are some of your “fashionspirations?”  What did you think of Langley Fox Hemingway’s style?  Let me know in the comments below.

P.S.  Do you see how I appear effortlessly cool?

  • OOTD | 2 Trends; Layers & Leather

So in a recent OOTD I said I was wearing old favorites, and finding new ones buried in the back of my closet.  It’s the same situation here, these pants are a new favorite of mine, in fact I hadn’t worn them ever before this.  This outfit is definitely a little bit edgier than the dresses I normally wear, but I really like it nonetheless.

What I Wore:  Black Leather Pants (Piper Project)//Plaid Flannel Shirt (Gap Kids)//Navy Blue Sweater//Statement Necklace (J. Crew)//Heeled Ankle Boots (Lucky Brand @ Saks Fifth Avenue)

This is an outfit from a little while ago, when it was close to freezing outside, which is why there are so many layers and dark colors.  Luckily the weather has gotten nicer, and photo opportunities have become more frequent and common.  Anyways, in this outfit I really wanted to be better than my previous OOTD, which really caught people’s attention.  I thought it called for some drastic measures, so I whipped out the leather pants from the bottom of my drawer.

    DSCF2294

    DSCF2282

I knew that this outfit needed some layers, after all pants and a sweater is something anybody could come up with.  Since I’ve really been enjoying the laid-back look of button down and flannel shirts I added this red and blue one to the mix.  Once I had that it was easy to add the navy blue sweater; they seemed to match perfectly.

    DSCF2313

    DSCF2315

The accessories are really what made this outfit spectacular.  Despite what has appeared on my blog, I don’t actually wear these heeled ankle boots a lot so I was glad they made an appearance.  They’re really very simple, but I think that the classiness of the boots really contradict the bagginess of the pants, so it’s a pretty great balancing act.  At first I was skeptical, but once cuffed the pants everything seemed to fall together.

    DSCF2265

    DSCF2328

I also added this necklace to pull the whole ensemble together. The colors really go together well, especially with the pretty pink tones of the circular jewels.  It’s not really my necklace, my mom’s actually, but it fits the outfit, so I just had to borrow it.  I’m also really glad that I went with a necklace that’s short and like a collar, rather than a long one with a pendant, as this makes the outfit look really put together.

  • OOTD | Old and New Favorites

Well hello there!  Yes, my schedule has been changed yet again.  I will post every 3-4 days though.  It’s OK though, I am coming back an rewarding you for your patience with brownie points, and an OOTD.

Lately I have been banning myself from wearing certain items in my closet that have been over-worn.  It’s led to a lot of frustration, but also a lot interesting outfit combinations, and a fresh look at what’s actually in my closet.  I’ve been wearing things I’ve never considered before, and finding out that certain pieces really do match more than I thought.  Hopefully this adventure will lead to more interesting OOTD and some new favorites in my closet.

    IMG_0418

IMG_0420 What I Wore:  Skinny Green Pants (Crewcuts – Old)//Golden-Yellow Braided Belt//Black Ankle Fold Over Combat Boots $40 (Nordstrom’s Rack -Old)//Neon Pink Sweater  (J. Crew)// Black and White Long Mid-Length Sleeved Cardigan (Forever 21 – Old)// Owl Necklace (Forever 21- Old)// Pink Bow Headband (ASOS)

I’ve also recently been looking for more creative ways to display my photos, so I thought that outfit lays would be a good choice.  They’re actually in my blogging inspiration notebook, so I’ve been looking for an excuse to give it a try.  Plus face it, sometimes you really just don’t want to be on the model.

There has been so many reasons why I didn’t want to wear these pants.  First of all, they’re a little too big in the waist, so a belt is necessary.  Second of all, I really didn’t think that green went with many other colors, and therefore it was close to impossible to find a matching shirt and shoes.  It turns out these pants are great after all.

    IMG_0423

This sweater was new, and I was dying to wear it, but I couldn’t imagine pink matching many colors other than black and white.  So I was a little bit skeptical about this shirt and pants combination, but it worked out in the end.  I’m definitely looking forward to wearing these two pieces again, in yet another creative way.

  • OOTD |60s Quirk and Midi Skirts

As any long time readers, or those who stalked my archives may know, I love vintage.  The 50s and 60s especially.  That whole Outsiders, Greasers, Socs, beehives, and poodle skirts era is pretty much my obsession.  I love pastel diners with milkshakes, and roller skating waiters/waitresses.  When I saw this skirt on ASOS I knew it was perfect for a 60s OOTD.

    DSCF2063

    What I Wore

Fluffy Red-and-Black Sweater (ASOS)//Polka Dot Skirt: ASOS//Heeled Mini-Boots(Lucky Brand at Saks Fifth Avenue)//Stockings(Gap)//Obsessed Necklace (Forever 21)

Ever since forever (which sounds impressive, but was only 2 weeks ago) I have been searching for some sort of fluffy sweater and midi skirt ensemble on ASOS for an OOTD.  As you may know, this online store made me very agitated, because while I waited for them to fix technical issues, my dream sweater was going out of stock.  I constantly put it into my cart to reserve it every 60 minutes, but in the end it went out of stock.  I quickly grabbed a red version that I wasn’t sure I was going to like as much.  I like this one better for my OOTD, because it matches everything. The fur is black, but the base is red, so it’s not to dreary, but not some weird color that goes with nothing else in my closet.

I’ve sort of been on a mission to buy more clothes so I will always have these really elaborate outfits on.  But what really happens is I have these 5 pieces I really like I wear every week, in one way or another.  I’ve still got a couple dollars left on my ASOS card/voucher, so we’ll see how that turns out.

The skirt wasn’t anything fancy, but that’s fine, seeing how this stuff won’t fit forever.  It’s basically just a really cotton-y material you could find anywhere.  But the sweater is really soft, and warm.  It’s very thick, which is perfect, seeing as how it’s either snowing or feels like -1 degrees outside which is not an exaggeration.

In terms of inspiration, obviously it’s the 50s and 60s. As always. The midi skirt just kind of reminded me of a poodle skirt.  Apparently I was correct because my mom asked me why I looked like I was from the 60s.  Because I wanted to.

Edit:  I actually wrote this 3 months ago, but I never posted it.
  • OOTD | Lovely Layers

A few weeks ago I went shopping at J. Crew and found one of the most vintage and classy dresses in the world,  and ever since I’ve been dying to wear it.  But not in just any old way – I wanted to make this OOTD special.  Everyone was quite surprised that I liked the dress, but it’s actually one of my new favorite pieces in my closet.  I guess it’s all about ‘figuring out my identity’ and discovering my personal style.  Apparently I do not have one, but I do think there’s going to be a post about the evolution of my personal style one day.

    DSCF2238

What I Wore: Black and Grey Dress (J. Crew) //Light Blue ‘Perfect Fit’ Turtleneck Shirt (J. Crew)//Pleated Black Flared Skirt (Anthropologie)//Black Heeled Ankle Boots (Cole Haan)//Purple Cross-Body (Kate Spade)

I’ve been liking layers a lot lately, they’re a really simple way to make an OOTD more interesting – one of my main goals when picking out my clothes.  Now I really can’t say that I’m a huge fan of turtlenecks – I found them quite annoying when I was younger – but I do believe a lot of different lengths, textures, and colors were added to this outfit, especially by such a simple item of clothing.

    DSCF2240

Another piece I really like is this dress, it’s so classy and vintage.  It’s also really different from the dresses I usually wear, instead of being very young and playful, this is more mature and traditional.  The panels of leather on the side are a really nice addition, they make the the dress a little less grandma-ish, and a lot more modern.  The tightness of the dress also adds to this look and aesthetic.

I wore this necklace to really call attention to the layers and the collars of this outfit.  That’s one of my favorite parts of the ensemble, and something I really wanted to show off.  The necklace also adds a nice transition between the stretchy fabric, and leather collar of the dress.  It also adds some quirkiness and color to the outfit, before the necklace, this OOTD seemed a little drab and dark, but afterwards I felt like there was a lot more ‘me’ in the outfit.

Do you like a more classy or quirky style?  Do you like layers or minimalist outfits?  Let me know in the comments.

  • 3 Ways to Style a Necklace | Mink and Stone

    DSCF2159

I’ve partnered up* with the brand new jewelry company, Mink and Stone to show you my 3 favorite ways to wear the same necklace, most likely your favorite, over and over again.  But instead of creating a uniform revolving around your necklace, I’ve shown you 3 different, easily re-created styles in which to wear your necklace.

Just a quick heads up, I found not all the colors are the exact way they appear when you design the necklace on the website.  For example, the silver heart I ordered appeared darker and more grungy in person than online.  Also, these are probably necklaces you treat yourself to for things like As on midterms, (pretty solid logic there) because they’re handmade, (not mass produced) and cost more than necklaces you might find at Forever 21 for example.

    Casual

    DSCF2168

Casual is probably my go to style on the weekends, despite how much I dislike to admit that to myself.  It’s quite easy just to throw on a pair of jeans, boots, and a sweater.  But a 1-of-a-kind necklace, a couple of bracelets, and/or rings on top of that, will really make your outfit a lot less uniform.  I’d recommend statement pieces, like I mentioned in this post, or quirky pieces like mine from Mink and Stone.

    Dressy

    DSCF2164

Probably my favorite of the three, dressy does take some creativity.  But I’m not talking about floor-length gowns, and 4 inch heels.  I’m more about mid length dress, and some sort of cover, whether it’s a sweater, or a kimono, unless it’s really warm outside.  In the fall and winter pairing Oxfords and quirky knee-length socks, along with some really cool jewelry is a great way to doll up your outfit, without being too boring.  To keep it simple, add a minimal amount of necklaces and rings, but I really like to wear lots of chunky rings, and layer necklaces of all lengths.

    Business-Like (Yet Quirky)

    DSCF2162

A blazer, flats-the workplace uniform.  I don’t actually have a job, but whenever I have nothing else to put over a shirt, a blazer has become my go-to.  Instead of buying multiple different styles (of blazers) in multiple different colors, why not not to add small inexpensive touches to an outfit.  Pins and shoe clips are simple, affordable ways (even for me, someone without a job) to make your blazer and shoes more fun.  But to go even further, or avoid the purchase of anything else, why not find a really nice, interesting go-to piece, (like I’ve mention about 400 times in this post) to spice things up.

*This is a sponsored post, as Mink and Stone has gifted and/or compensated me to write this post.  All opinions are my own, as I truly love the idea of designing your own piece of jewelry.  View my full disclaimer here.

  • New Rings-The Transitive Nightfall of Diamonds

I am quite a fan of jewelry.

    Obviously.

I mean, how else can I add something to an outfit?!?!  I think I have more jewelry than I have winter clothes.  Just saying.

So of course, if anyone wants to buy me a present, they buy me jewelry.  I think I currently need a new favorite piece of jewelry because I have been wearing the same TopShop necklace every time I post an OOTD, and the same cardigan.

    I need more flowing, long sweaters, what can I say? DSCF0867 DSCF0868 DSCF0870 DSCF0873

My mom bought me this set of two rings from Jewel Mint, turns out they’re supposed to have the same sized band, but the pearl ones a teensy bit too big, and the dagger-thing is a little bit too small.  I think I have fat fingers, but it’s more likely that models have unrealistically sized hands.  Just saying…

Let’s see.  In terms of life, nothing new.  I mean my dogs scared the UPS guy into leaving the package on the sidewalk, my best friend’s math group associated normal things, with quite disgusting things (if you know what I mean), yeah, that’s about it.  The majority of my days consists of me either not talking to anyone, talking about school work, or talking constantly with my friends.  Oh, and tutoring…  Yay for smart people!

Did you know the average person in my state consumes enough energy to send Marty back in time 138 times?

Are you telling me that you built a time machine… out of a DeLorean?

Yeah, I’m one of those nerdy people….  FLUX CAPACITOR!!!

  • OOTD-Still Fresh as a Daisy

I just happened to take a HUGE shopping trip at the outlet.  Well, it was supposed to be a 2 shirt return trip, but knowing me, I turned it into a spree.  And since I was super excited to get some knee high socks, guess what I did?!?!  Don’t look down.  You did it anyway, didn’t you?  Well, I wore them the very next day.  And sneak peek.  The day after that.  A clean pair of course.  Gosh, stop jumping to such terrible conclusions.

    emoji emoto DSCF0862 DSCF0864

    Coat: J. Crew//Shirt: Old//Skirt: Old// Socks: Gap//Shoes: T.J. Maxx//Ring: H&M

I was inspired enough to take my sister to the playground, just to give you guys a different background.  But tomorrow the high is in the 60s, so don’t expect much from me.  I happen to be one of those people who wants the cold weather to come for the clothes, but then hates actually being cold.

More people looked at me like I was crazy today.  For some reason not wearing Pink, and yoga pants, and UGGs, is like a fashion crisis in my school.  But I actually think I am the savior, considering what some people wear.  Just saying…  One of my iffy friends (you know the one that said something about you, but you pretend it didn’t happen so you have someone in class to talk to… awkwardly) kept looking at my shoes, and my socks, and then at me, and I acted oblivious to the whole thing.  Because it’s funny.  Not because I’m mean, but because someone is pretty much judging my clothes, right in front of me, which is stupid, so I think I should get to play stupid.

Oh, and some boy who happens to be like 5 inches taller than me who I’ve known for 2 years, but didn’t talk to at all last year, happens to care if I like him or now now?!?!  All because I didn’t let him borrow my phone to see what textbooks he needed, because I didn’t have it.  I hate 7th grade.  Seriously, what is this whole dating thing?!?!

The conversation went something like this: (he was sort of talking to another person at their locker, but sort of indirectly talking to me)

Guy: Nyah… Can I borrow your phone?

Me: (I don’t have it) *silence* (I don’t talk a lot despite how much I write, so this is normal)

Guy: (to friend) I don’t think she likes me.

Me: I don’t dislike many people.  (supposed to be mysterious and get me out of this conversation so I can go eat lunch).

Guy:  But I’m one of them?

    Me: No. (*walks away hungrily)

But it’s fun to stand out, and get people’s attention. I don’t know, because I can laugh about people’s reactions later.  But I am totally a feminist in this whole clothes thing, honestly, the last thing on my mind when I get dressed is some tall blonde boy with “dreamy eyes.”  Yeah, I know the stereotypes, I do like to read.

That was a lot more than I was hoping to write, and rant.
