From the Paper Pad to Cartoon Bag

Tres Chere Readers,

JFP, also known as JumpFromPaper features many whimsical handbags, and backpacks.  Their hand drawn designs are unlike many others designer’s computer processed designs.  The cartoonish bags would make people smile and laugh anytime.

But you would think only teen designers had the creativity to draw and make these designs.  When in actuality, two young girls in their twenties made these bags.  Chay Su and Rika Lin only wanted to create something that’s beautiful and unique.  That inspired the idea of 2D illustrations becoming real bags.

Chay and Rika have a very routine like design process.  They have a brainstorming session to determine a theme.  Then they both sketch as many ideas for the collection as they can.  Then they meet back up, possibly over coffee, and decide on a final product.  This probably involves a lot of laughter.

Everyone has a different inspiration.  JFP’s id from the colorful, cultural, Taiwan.  They also have some childhood influences.  Comics, manga and cartoons stuck with these designers throughout their life.

Chay and Rika were not always sure if their products would sell.  They decided to just trust themselves and take a risk.  The first collection woke up the country in 2010.  Now they’re available in 25 countries worldwide.

They have bags for everyone!  Hidden zippers for tablets and netbooks are perfect for the college student exploring the city.  The polka dotted pink ones are perfect for the girly girl getting her first purse.  the bold messenger bag works for those professional people who want to bring a little fun to work.  Have a dream location?  Or even a future vacation?  There’s even the cliché briefcase, suitcase thing with the stickers on it for you.

These designers are not letting it all go to their head.  They stay humble all the time.  They listen to fans, learn from mistakes, and continue to develop new items.

Designer Profile: ModCloth

By 17 Nov 2013 0 No tags Permalink 0

Tres Chere Readers,

In 2002, a young designer started a fashion company.  Her name was Susan Koger, and she was in high school.  She named it ModCloth.  At first, it was just a way to manage her closet.  She couldn’t possibly find a way to organize her stuffed closet full of vintage thrift store finds.  But in 2012, the business became serious.  She made $100 million dollars!

This is Susan Koger:

ModCloth is continuing today.  It is still a very successful business.  She now has added a décor line.  Not fashion!  Home Décor!  Now there’s even a plus sized line of clothing.  And it’s not just a store.  It’s also a social site.  Once you buy ModCloth products you can post pictures of yourself wearing them.  There’s even a catalog.  This business is really taking off!

Here are some pictures of the vintage, indie, retro clothes you can find at ModCloth:

Cherry Blossoms, Abstract Art, Faces, Legwarmers, Greek Coins, Architecture! These are of Few of the Runway Things

By 12 Nov 2013 1 No tags Permalink 0

Tres Chere Readers,

Long time no see. Actually the last time I saw you was about 3 days ago… 2 days ago. Something like that. I spent most of today studying for a math test tomorrow, and a science test Thursday. Both by the same teacher. Ughh. But after I did 60 long problems I took a break to eat dinner and make business cards. After finally getting the design right I printed a copy and realized the margins were off, and part of some cards weren’t printing. Never take a screenshot of something off the internet then copy and paste it. They will not all line up.

Well enough of my boring diary entry. I have decided to talk about the clothes from the runway you can incorporate parts of into your daily outfits. Okay, maybe not. It’s more of me telling you about what the clothes look like to me. And remind me of. And how they inspire me. I don’t want to TELL you to do anything.

First up, Prada:

This collection had a wonderful, yet kind of creepy, gallery of faces. This season I am getting the feeling that for many designers it was time to show the world fashion is art. There has been much argument over this, and finally the argument can be considered over. At least in my opinion. After seeing so many bloggers style report this is definitely a common theme. I really like the little face in the corner. It reminds me of some cliché movie where there’s a shy girl standing in the rain under an umbrella, as she watches the other kids play. Or a very detailed water color painting. If you look closely most of the dress is made of tiny little flowers, with beadwork. This simple detail brings the whole thing together. And it conveys a message,(made by me of course), the littlest details can often be the most important.

NEXT! (Imagine that like a casting agent would say it):

I’m getting what the designer is doing here. Incorporating 80s legwarmers, abstract art, and bold eye makeup. This coat was one of my favorites. The face is so original, and on a coat is even better. It reminds me of a video game I used to play where the only dress she wore was her face, and her hair was the rest of the dress. so the top was her head, and the bottom was supposedly her super long hair. I’m always finding an excuse to wear my lonely legwarmers, so that’s a plus. O by the way, it snowed here this morning, so I got an excuse to layer on piles and piles of stuff. My favorite thing is the collar, I love the royal shade of blue against the creamy colored coat. Such a nice contrast.

Next! (in a phony French accent):

OMG! I am in love with this collection. This is truly a work of art. It reminds me of the collages I did yesterday. The old Greek coins add fun pop of color. Like polka dots, but more posh. I absolutely adore the belt, it looks like something I could make myself with the right materials. And I love how much it cinches the waist. The dress would look amazing without it, but the belt gives it a flirty fun feel. That would actually be a fun post. Comment down below if I should. The architecture over a sheer background is just outstanding. I don’t know how people come up with these things. And of course, the cherry blossom tree. That sells it, I’ve found my true love. In fact, when I move to Paris, I’m GOING to find a cherry blossom tree. Even if it’s fake. I think I saw one at Home Goods, hmm… The earrings incorporate both the Greek goddess aspect, and the cherry blossom pink. Thank you Dolce and Gabanna!

Okay, I know there inspiration now Greek, architecture, cherry blossoms, and Tavi Gevinson. The first place I saw the flower headband was Tavi. I could probably make one myself too. I really like the 3D flowers, and the flowiness of the dress. Also, the super chunky indie heels, are awe inspiring. Well Ciao for Niao! I’ll probably do another one of these tomorrow.

I take no credit for these photos. They all came from Vogue fashion. If you want a picture down, and it is yours contact me. We’ll have it taken care of immediately.(But probably not between the hours of 7:30-3:15)

Domino Nail Art Tutorial

This is an easy tutorial for domino nail art.
Materials
Black Nail Polish
White Nail Polish
Base Coat
Topcoat
Toothpick
Nail Striping Masking Tape (can be found at Sally’s for $3.49)

image

Sidenote:  If you want some nails to be black with white dots, and some white with black this may vary.

1. Make sure your nails are dry, clean, filed, and shaped the way you’d like.  Apply the base coat to your nail.  Wait 5 minutes for it to dry.
2. Paint your nails completely black, or completely white.  Apply two coats of the same color.

image

3. Waits for your nails to dry completely.  This should take about 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the thickness of your coats.  If not completely dry when you take off the tape it will peel off the polish.
4. Apply the masking tape in the middle of your nail horizontally (across, side to side).  It doesn’t have to be exactly perfect.
5. Paint a line straight across the tape in the opposite color of the existing nail color.  The polish should be on the tape a little bit.

image

6. After you have done all the nails with the stripe take the tape off slowly.  This will give you a clean, clear, edge.
7. Now take your toothpick and stick it in the very end of the color of your stripe.  Look at the picture below.

image

8. You will want to place your dots according to the picture above, it will have many different possible combinations.  Just dot the nails by using the polish covered tip of your toothpick.
9. After doing this to all your nails, (they can have different arrangements and numbers).  You can also alternate dot and base colors.  Wait for this to dry, it should take about 5-10 minutes.  This ensures the dots and line won’t smudge when apply the topcoat. You wouldn’t want all the precise work to to to waste now would you?
10. Apply the topcoat like you did base.
Wait about five minutes for this to dry.  You are now done.  Enjoy your nails.

Here are some fun variations using the techniques taught:

Tips on Keeping a fashion Sketchbook/Art Journal/Style Journal

image

Get a journal with lightly colored paper, mine is pink!  It can be lined or unlined.  Lined can be neater though, but eh eh for drawing.  Color adds character.
Print out photos, quotes, and illustrations that inspire you.  Then glue them in.
Make notes about these pics.  Some examples are: What do like about it?  What is essential in creating a design, piece, or outfit like this?  Some info about the designer. Your trend analysis(is it good or bad, what do people like about it).  Make collages.  Pages look boring with only pictures and words.  Add fold out notes like cards, sketches, fabrics, and sample stitching.
Don’t be afraid to try new things.  Be a Tavi Gevinson.  Add new styles, designers, cultures, and textures.
Make some pages foldable. It gives visual interest.  Add in business cards, perfume samples, brochures, and catalogs.  Multimedia looks great in sketch books.
Your sketches don’t have to be on every page, only when you feel like it.  Most pages are either recreations that can be used later, or inspiration and notes.
Above all have fun, its your sketchbook. Make sure it is totally you.  These were only suggestions.
